Vila Madalena is one of the most exciting neighborhoods of São Paulo; one of the few places in town where you can have fun during the day and also in the evening.

It’s a great option for those who want to avoid the, most times, chaotic traffic and way too crowded places in Vila Olímpia (during the night, that is). Especially if you’re not “young”, since the age-range of most nightclubs in Vila Olímpia is of 18-22.

A traditional bohemian neighborhood, “Vila Madá” has some… exotic street names, varying from a Spanish Priest from the XV century (Aspicuelta) to a sunflower like “Girassol” and even “Harmonia” (Harmony) and “Purpurina” (Glitter).

That is Avenida Paulista (Paulista Avenue). Probably the most known and busiest avenue from São Paulo (or from the whole country? I should check that).

Many people from other states fear this place without even knowing it, especially those from small towns. Of course, it can be scary, it’s understandable. It’s the most important business center of the state, it’s always crowded (while some, or most, street and avenues of city are empty after 9pm - besides those streets filled with bars and nightclubs - you can easily see a good amount of people walking around at ANY hour of the day).

But to sum the whole avenue and its streets nearby to a business center only it’s largely unfair. The place is much, much more than that. It has malls, restaurants, pubs, bars, theaters, movie theaters, hotels, schools, colleges, museums, bookstores, hospitals, gyms, etc, etc and etc. It has much more than many cities in this country have.

Here are a few things you shouldn’t miss....

If you are ever in São Paulo and go around the city by subway, you will notice that many stations have art exhibits. Some are permanent, others change. I find this initiative rather interesting, seeing as I often take the subway and I enjoy taking a few minutes to at least quickly observe the exhibits, if I don't have much time to take a nice while looking at them.

The latest set of exhibits are a partnership between Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (read more about it here) and the São Paulo subway system- Metrô. Together, they will bring to São Paulo individual artist expos in many different stations, during the months of August and September. The art collection comes from the Centro Cultural Bando do Brasil from Rio de Janeiro and the artists' own private collection.

Check it out There is no additional cost to view these collections, but some of them are *inside* the subway - meaning that you have to be going somewhere and have paid your entrance fee, and others are out of the subway, meaning you have to have left the area where you board or be coming into that particular station. Either way, at the most it costs your ticket price, and nothing extra, so check it out if you can!

Here is a bit more on the artists and their respective stations!

Chácara Klabin - Green Line
Artist: Sérgio Guerini
A bit more about the exhibit: He is an artist from Santo André, a city that neighbors São Paulo, and he is going to show his watercolors. He has been in previous exhibits such as the Salão Paulista de Arte Contemporânea, and the I Bienal da Aquarela Brasileira.
Dates: August 01 to September 01
*This location can be reached from the Blue and Red lines. Check out the subway map here and here to find out your route!

Largo Treze - Purple Line
Artist: Carybé
A bit more about the exhibit: His exhibit will be serigraphs based on "O Compadre de Ogum", a chapter in the book "Pastores da Noite", by Jorge Amado.
Dates: August 02 to September 05
*This location is not connected to the other subway lines. The only way I know how to get there is by going to the Barra Funda station, and switching (for free) to the train line there, and getting off at the Santo Amaro train station, which is connected to the purple line. Subway maps can be found here and here.

Imigrantes - Green Line
Artist: Carlos Scliar
A bit more about the exhibit: This exhibit, entitled Il Guarany, will also be comprised of serigraphs inspired by the musical instruments used in the O Guarani opera, by Carlos Gomes.
Dates: August 03 to September 03
A bit more about the exhibit: His exhibit, Dez Visões Rupestres, shows serigraphs that reflect the aestethic and spiritual reverence of its author to the primitive arts, being based on real drawings done millions of years ago in the caves of Goiás and Bahia.

Anyone interested in street art and the graffiti scene should pay a visit to SESC Pinheiros for their current exhibition ‘A Conquista Do Espaco’, which features work from a collection of artists from around the world, as well as some of Sao Paulo’s own such as Onesto, and Fefe Talavera. The exhibition starts on the street outside, with full wall paintings on either side of the modern SESC building, a visit to which is worth a separate entry all of it’s own.

There are sculptures from American Artists Leon Reid, and Mark Jenkins and running down the street next to SESC is a full walls length stencil piece by Polish artist M-CITY.

Inside the exhibition, which is free, there are more examples of the work, as well as some fascinating film installations about another of Sao Paulo’s artists Alexandre Orion, who uses the dirt covered road tunnels as his canvas by cleaning areas of dirt away, rather than adding anything of his own.

This is a really nice exhibition, and well worth a visit. Currently showing and will continue until 23rd September.

Everyone should have figured out by now that São Paulo, being such a huge and diverse city, has something for absolutely every one to do, and a place for everyone to feel welcome at. As such, we have seen posts about the Japanese community, posts about high-end fashion and top class shopping, restaurants of all sorts, and a variety of other events and things to do, that cover a wide range of interests. As many people know, São Paulo has a huge gay pride parade every year, and due to the immense population of gays, lesbians, bisexual, and transexual people, it is not hard to find a good GLS club to attend.

Even if you are not gay, if you love good music, it is a great place to go, and if you are a woman, you get the added perk of not being constantly hassled and annoyed by guys trying to make out with you, so I recommend that anyone that is not homophobic go to one at least once...

Anyhow, this post is about one club in particular - A Lôca. This club, located near Av. Paulista, has a great weekly programmation, and I can personally attest to the quality of Thursday nights. Great flashback music, a hilarious drag queen show, friendly people, and an interesting place make for a good night out. It's in a "little" house that during the day you drive by and barely notice that there is anything going on there at all. No signs, no nothing... but at night it comes alive, a banner comes out, and the line that forms at the door give an undeniable sign that there is something fun going on in there! Once you go in, you find an original decoration, comprised of a cavernous look and some flashback moments with games at one of the corners. As you walk in, you find out that in reality, the small-looking house is rather enourmous on the inside, and big enough for you to walk around, dance like crazy, and find a place to sit down, have a drink, and relax a little.

Check it out for yourself! Oh, and make sure you take an ID Card with you. They are very serious about the age limit, and they check *everyone*'s document.

Located just across the street from the oh-so-chic Hotel Emiliano, Santo Grão is the perfect spot for a cup of coffee, a sandwich, and a celebrity sighting (just yesterday there was an excited group of girls seated next to me who were there to try and catch a glimpse of Kiefer Sutherland who is in town to film a car commercial and is staying at the Emiliano). While they are most famous for their coffee beans, the food is also excellent with a menu ranging from Vietnamese spring rolls to your classic filet mignon sandwich with a side of crisps. The beverage menu is even more extensive than their food offerings, with coffee taking center stage in everything from a basic latté to a sinful milkshake (they offer soy milk as an option which was a pleasant surprise). Their juices are also quite satisfying, try the apple and ginger juice with cayenne pepper. Last but not least, their desserts are outstanding, including some of the best tiramisu I've had in Brazil as well as other creations such as chocolate pudding that arrives in an edible chocolate shell. At night the café turns into a lively bar, the perfect place for being among São Paulo's hot, young crowd.
