Vila Madá

Vila Madalena is one of the most exciting neighborhoods of São Paulo; one of the few places in town where you can have fun during the day and also in the evening.

It’s a great option for those who want to avoid the, most times, chaotic traffic and way too crowded places in Vila Olímpia (during the night, that is). Especially if you’re not “young”, since the age-range of most nightclubs in Vila Olímpia is of 18-22.

A traditional bohemian neighborhood, “Vila Madá” has some… exotic street names, varying from a Spanish Priest from the XV century (Aspicuelta) to a sunflower like “Girassol” and even “Harmonia” (Harmony) and “Purpurina” (Glitter).

My place to be

That is Avenida Paulista (Paulista Avenue). Probably the most known and busiest avenue from São Paulo (or from the whole country? I should check that).

Many people from other states fear this place without even knowing it, especially those from small towns. Of course, it can be scary, it’s understandable. It’s the most important business center of the state, it’s always crowded (while some, or most, street and avenues of city are empty after 9pm - besides those streets filled with bars and nightclubs - you can easily see a good amount of people walking around at ANY hour of the day).

But to sum the whole avenue and its streets nearby to a business center only it’s largely unfair. The place is much, much more than that. It has malls, restaurants, pubs, bars, theaters, movie theaters, hotels, schools, colleges, museums, bookstores, hospitals, gyms, etc, etc and etc. It has much more than many cities in this country have.

Here are a few things you shouldn’t miss....

Art Exhibit in the São Paulo Subways

If you are ever in São Paulo and go around the city by subway, you will notice that many stations have art exhibits. Some are permanent, others change. I find this initiative rather interesting, seeing as I often take the subway and I enjoy taking a few minutes to at least quickly observe the exhibits, if I don't have much time to take a nice while looking at them.

The ...
