During the second half of the 19th Century Argentina experienced a massive growth in population, due mainly to favorable immigration policies and declining economic conditions in Europe. A large part of this immigration passed through the antique port of Buenos Aires and many immigrants, particularly Italians, settled in the vicinity of the port which later came to be known as La Boca.

La Boca has been an epicenter of cultural activity in Buenos Aires since then. Many of Argentina's artists, writers, and intellectuals grew up in the neighborhood and often refer to it as a source of inspiration. The origins of Tango, perhaps the most recognized art form ever produced in the country, can be directly traced to the bars and streets of La Boca.

Visitors are often surprised at the vivid blend of colors that decorate the houses and businesses throughout the area. The defining characteristics are concentrated in a small pedestrian street that is known as El Caminito. This short stretch of road concentrates tango, street art, and the colors of La Boca in a way that is sure to impress you. Though many of the houses are still purely residential, it is also a great place to find souvenirs, leather stores, and restaurants. Mondays are a good day to avoid large tourist crowds, though you may not have as many items on sale as usual. Make sure to bring your camera along for some colorful shots!

The Buenos Aires metropolitan area contains close to a third of Argentina's entire population. This demographic concentration has led to a constantly increasing demand for affordable public transportation. Tourists are often impressed by avenues saturated with public buses and taxis, but it is all part of a massive and loosely organized system which moves close to 8 million people every day.

One of the main attractions in this area is the A Line of the Buenos Aires Subte (subway). Inaugurated in 1913, it is the oldest subway line in the continent, and indeed older than those in other major cities such as Madrid or Moscow. You may feel transported back to the beginning of the century by the antique charm of the stations, as well as the elegant wooden interior of the subway cars themselves.

Though public buses seem to buzz around at a frantic rate, and seemingly without schedules, the vast amount of different routes (close to 100) guarantees you can reach any destination with one or two combinations. Taxis are also plentiful, and with the exception of private drivers, are the safest way to get around town. You will find all of these options very affordable, and as long as you avoid the peak rush hours, you are bound to have a great ride as well!

Argentina is renowned throughout the world for its exquisite beef. The reputation is well founded; although similar and even higher quality can be found abroad, it is fair to say Argentine beef is among the best in the world. Some of the finest restaurants in the city are in Costanera Norte and Puerto Madero, such as Hereford and Cabaña Las Lilas respectively. However, you can also enjoy all the quality without the prices in friendly family restaurants across the city. A personal favorite is Rio Alba, on the corner of Oro and Cerviño streets.

A large part of the difference is in the cuts of meat, as well as the method used to cook it. The Argentine asado is characterized by large cuts, and traditionally uses embers from solid firewood instead of charcoal. Among the best choices to try are lomo (tenderloin), bife de chorizo (NY strip steak), c0lita de cuadril, and vacio. Chorizo (sausage), Mollejas (sweetbreads), and Provoleta cheese are great options to quell your hunger while you wait.

A great way to enjoy your meal is to accompany the meat with one of Argentina´s many fine wines. This deserves an entirely new post unto itself! Check back for that later.

Ever since the economic crisis of 2001 made fundamental changes in the exchange rate and the economy, shopping in Buenos Aires has become an excellent opportunity for visitors from abroad. A combination of major shopping malls, pedestrian boulevards, and even flea markets offers a broad range of options in terms of prices and quality.

The major shopping centers are in and around downtown Buenos Aires. For high-end shopping you can take a walk down Av. Alvear, and find major international brands such as Louis Vuitton, Armani, and Polo Ralph Lauren. Other brands, including sports, are found at malls like Patio Bullrich, Paseo Alcorta, and the beautifully decorated Galerías Pacifico.

A Buenos Aires shopping experience would be incomplete without a visit to Calle Florida, a bustling pedestrian boulevard that runs through the heart of the dowtown financial district. If you´re in the city on a Sunday, you´ll find unique items at the San Telmo flea market and a vast selection of antique stores in the sorrounding streets.

Although the origins of Tango are often traced back to African and European roots, this sensual and complex art form emerged from the urban fusion of late 19th century Buenos Aires. Combining unique music and a visually enticing dance performed by couples, it has since become a source of national pride and recognition for Argentina.

Tourists in Buenos Aires are often interested in watching Tango in its "pure" form, and are disappointed to see shows which are obviously tailored to please visitors. Many styles of Tango have emerged over the years, ranging from classics such as Carlos Gardel to modern composers like Astor Piazzola. Though it has become increasingly difficult to reserve seats due to limited space, El Viejo Almacen is widely considered to be the best venue to see the real deal.

Other options are mostly found in the San Telmo neighborhood, particularly along Balcarce street. Among the most popular are La Ventana and Michelangelo. For alternative and modern Tango shows, aim for Esquina Homero Manzi or Esquina Carlos Gardel. The easiest way to make reservations is simply to ask your hotel conciérge, they will be happy to help you out. Enjoy!
