During the second half of the 19th Century Argentina experienced a massive growth in population, due mainly to favorable immigration policies and declining economic conditions in Europe. A large part of this immigration passed through the antique port of Buenos Aires and many immigrants, particularly Italians, settled in the vicinity of the port which later came to be known as La Boca.
