Buenos Aires' Complex Network of Public Transportation
The Buenos Aires metropolitan area contains close to a third of Argentina's entire population. This demographic concentration has led to a constantly increasing demand for affordable public transportation. Tourists are often impressed by avenues saturated with public buses and taxis, but it is all part of a massive and loosely organized system which moves close to 8 million people every day.
One of the main attractions in this area is the A Line of the Buenos Aires Subte (subway). Inaugurated in 1913, it is the oldest subway line in the continent, and indeed older than those in other major cities such as Madrid or Moscow. You may feel transported back to the beginning of the century by the antique charm of the stations, as well as the elegant wooden interior of the subway cars themselves.
Though public buses seem to buzz around at a frantic rate, and seemingly without schedules, the vast amount of different routes (close to 100) guarantees you can reach any destination with one or two combinations. Taxis are also plentiful, and with the exception of private drivers, are the safest way to get around town. You will find all of these options very affordable, and as long as you avoid the peak rush hours, you are bound to have a great ride as well!
