Singapore’s New Hotel Majestic on “Mistress Street”

Singapore’s New Majestic Hotel opened in 2006 with 30 unique rooms designed by prominent artists and designers. Showcasing a mix of vintage and new furniture, the rooms adhere to different themes from the ‘Hanging Bed Room’ where murals span whole walls through to the incredible Aquarium Room where a glass-encased bathtub sits in the middle of the room.

The Hotel Majestic was built by 34-year old former lawyer Loh Lik Peng, the man behind the cult boutique Hotel 1929. Loh Lik Peng was recently voted Singapore’s tourism entrepreneur of the year.

Not too bad for a former brothel turned fab property (They said that the hotel is on a street interestingly nicknamed “mistress street”) The room had psychedelic female form as a headboard and a flat screen tv at the foot of the bed. I just felt that the lavatories and showers should still be in a separate room… but i felt the best part of the room (aside from the free keihls products) was the fab outdoor tub…[TripAdvisor]

Sweet Bedroom Suite at the Sugar Palm Resort, Phuket

In general, we are very happy with the hotel and service. However there was very frustrating incident involving Reception Manager which spoilt our otherwise very good experience. We asked her assistance to call local tour company. After she did, she asked us to pay 20 Baht for the phone call. It’s not the money that matters (however 20 Baht for the local phone call is quite a lot) but the fact itself. The hotel reception is there to assist guest with their needs, to help them and make them welcome. Flight and tour confirmations, help with reservations of all kinds is supposed to be part of their service. This is even for 2-star hotels. That’s why it was really frustrating to be treated as described above especially by Reception Manager and in the 4-star resort.

Otherwise, the rest of the hotel staff was very friendly. The hotel rooms are very nice and modern, so is the swimming pool. Good location - close to the sea, restaurants and shops. One suggestion to the hotel: fit some shelves in the wardrobe (for some reason there are none) and a rail for the face towels. The staff should also improve their English as we had few instances of misunderstanding especially at the restaurant…[TripAdvisor]

Cozy Nelle in a Lloyd Hotel Bed, Amsterdam

nelle snuggles up in one of our very comfortable beds

The Lloyd Hotel is a new Dutch hotel centrally situated in the fashionable heart
of Amsterdam’s Eastern Docklands Area. The hotel has a colourful and varied past that even includes a stint as a boy’s home for delinquents years ago.

We featured the Lloyd Hotel in a recent blog post here at HotelBedHQ.com.

Although our last story on the Lloyd might have been slightly less than flattering, we have to admit that the image above of Nelle cozying up in her bed looks really quite exquisite.

Bed & Beer at the Beat Hotel

The Beat Hotel is the inspiration of Steven Lowe, former associate of W.S. Burroughs. Lowe’s connection to “the Beats” gives him a unique perspective and access to his personal collection of Beat books, artifacts and art. In this hotel Lowe has created a learning center as well as a vacation retreat for visitors.

All eight guest rooms of the restored 1957 motel are decorated with paintings and photographs by Burroughs himself. Vintage manual typewriters sit on simple desks. According to Travel & Leisure (April 2003), “Unlike the original beatniks, however, you don’t have to suffer for your art. Instead of urban grit, you have sweeping views of the Coachella Valley, a surreal mix of palm trees, desert sand, wind farms, and mountains.”

Bath with a Bed with a View at the W, Seoul

W Hotels, Starwood’s uber-contemporary boutique hotel group isn’t quite so “boutiquey” any more. The company is growing fast, and has developed many larger size properties not typical of the boutique segment.

W Hotels still has a certain “edge” to it though, and it remains one of the most successful brand launches in the history of hotels for its unique and strong brand identity and successful positioning.

The hotel bed featured above at the W Seoul Walkerhill, Korea shows off the W’s trademark “lookey-loo” transparent shower overlooking the bed. And check out the incredible misty view out the window!

Amsterdam Asylum-Chic Beds at the Lloyd Hotel

The Lloyd used to be a kind of boy’s home for delinquents..you can kinda tell, although the hotel tries to turn that toward chic boutique style.

Originally a boarding house, youth detention centre and then artists’ studios, the Lloyd Hotel is a design hotel set in Amsterdam’s fashionable East Docklands. Built in the 1920’s, the 116 room hotel offers guestrooms that range from an extremely broad “one to five stars”. Many rooms retain original features such as glazed ceramic tiles, wooden beams, and 1920s chairs blended seamlessly into design statements with bold contemporary furnishings.

And according to one guest, you can expect an experience every bit as exquisite as you would expect from a detention centre:

The two star rooms - described as “surprising” on the lloyd website certainly live up to their name. However, this surprise was more of a shock than a delight. The room, in the basement (by no means a bargain) had no natural light, the door to the room did not close properly (as a woman staying alone this was a worry), cleaning equiptment had been left in the bathroom, no mirror, no hairdryer, tiny tiny bed and worst of all pipes which led down through my room so you could hear when anyone above had flushed the loo - the pipes were covered in cobwebs and spiders - this room cannot have been cleaned for a long time. Absolutely awful - stay in the Hotel Bellevue if you want cheap, pleasant and clean instead. I wish I had photos to share how awful this place was…[TripAdvisor]

Chambers Hotel - Best Bed Ever

Self-styled as “a seamless fusion of uptown luxury and downtown cool”, New York City’s Chambers Hotel has established itself as one of the city’s most alluring and chic hotels.

And when you’ve grown tired of throwing down your hard earned cash at Tiffany’s on 5th Avenue, you can head back to your guestroom for a snooze on the “best bed ever”.

Our Luvvv Bed in Bangkok!

What a surprise!!! The room was massively huge I must add. It’s the Twin Towers Hotel, which is located near Hua Lampong Train station.

Very nice set-up. The “Twin Tower” moniker does not seem to to be referring to the pillows, that’s for sure!

White look at New York’s Hotel QT

Styled as “New York’s newest affordable crash pad”, the Hotel QT is a contemporary retreat with some interesting twists, including a desire for anonymity with a strict “no pictures allowed” policy.

The hotel’s swimming pool, lobby and lounge are intermixed into a den of fulfillment all on the main level. And in the bedrooms…a white sleep haven on platforms. Bunk beds are even making a comeback at the QT.

Oops, we got a picture…keep it on the “QT”.

Socks Room - the Holy Grail

If you ever wondered where the missing socks from your laundry hamper went…look no further! They’re all at the 46 room Arte Luise Kunsthotel in Berlin, Germany.

This unique guestroom concept was created by Christoph Platz:

The artist works with associations. His sculptures represent the outer shell, devoid of content. Clothing without people; on the walls of the room, in a specially produced showcase desk, or used as a stool.

They symbolize travel; clothes for the trip, utensils, and souvenirs for home. Everyday objects intricately carved in limewood develop a mysterious inner life in the hotel room. Fantastic and simply beautiful.
