Airport Security Breach Investigated

The Canadian government has launched an official investigation into how a Sun Media reporter was able to walk into restricted areas of a major airport five years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The probe began yesterday morning after the Sun newspaper chain published reports by reporter Fabrice de Pierrebourg on how he walked the tarmac at Montreal’s Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport.

Musicians plea to lift instrument ban

The Musicians’ Union in the UK is planning to lobby the British Pariament over some security measures put in place which ban instruments from being taken on to planes as carry on luggage.

A spokesman for the Union says this new ban is affecting union members’ livelihood.

When Paraliment starts a new session next month the union plans to table a motion lifting the bans.

Passengers flying from the UK can take only one item of hand luggage no bigger than a laptop case.

Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander indicated yesterday that the anti-terror restrictions could be eased.

Airport Staff Rewarded

“PROUD” bosses at Manchester Airport are to throw a staff party and hand out £75,000 in gift vouchers to celebrate the way the terror alert was handled earlier this month.

Around 750 security and customer service staff will each be given a £100 gift voucher to spend at airport shops to reward their “professionalism and dedication”.

And they will be invited to a planned ‘thank you’ bash along with their families at the end of September.

Passengers faced check-in delays on August 10 after the government announced stringent new restrictions on hand luggage to tackle an alleged terror plot targeting flights to the USA.

But travellers at Manchester Airport were not as badly affected as those at Heathrow and Gatwick.

Chicago Airport Employee Arrested

Chicago Police arrested a 41-year-old female airline employee on Monday after she set off metal detectors and would not let security re-scan her for weapons before she entered the restricted part of the airport.

She was arrested on charge of state disorderly conduct. The woman will face a civil fine of up to $3,000 for trying to enter a secure part of the airport without being screened.

All this so you won’t be late for work? The moral of this story is:

He who waits, doesn’t get arrested and fined $3,000.

Major Airport Delay

If you thought your last four hour delay on your way home from the annual meeting was a horrible experience, try adding an extra 40 hours to that.

270 passengers spent 2 days in Glasgow waiting for their Canada bond plane to take off. Unfortuantely for everyone on the Zoom Airlines flight, due to mechanical malfunctions it just didn’t happen.

The delay has caused a little bit of back log too. Serveral Zoom Airlines flights into Canada will be delayd for at least two hours today.

Segways can be useful

I think by now we have all seen a Segway and wondered what the point is. It doesn’t seem like a product that makes much sense in a big crowded city when you can easily walk, take a train, subway, or even the bus.

Airports, including Phoenix Sky Harbor, might just change your opinion. Sky Harbor has realized they are perfect for airport security and police to maneuver quickly through an airport when they have to. Plus, they do not take up as much room as a golf cart. With a Segway you can move from one end of the terminal to the other quickly and easily. The slight height advantage the device gives also it makes it easier to see. The Segway is also faster than running, thus it allows security to save their energy for when real emergencies or problems occur.

Bill attempts to halt US Airport funding

Flightglobal.com reports that last week a leading US legislator called for an end to government funding of airport upgrades to accommodate the Airbus A380, at least until a domestic passenger airline purchases the aircraft.

The comments by Representative John Mica coincide with the release of a US Government Accountability Office (GAO) report forecasting that $927 million will be spent by 18 domestic airports to prepare for the arrival of the A380, which is expected to be used for revenue services into the USA from 2007.

Free Wi-Fi at KCI

In an effort to create a more positive travel experience Kansas City International Airport (KCI) has made wireless Internet services throughout all terminals free. The technology has been available in Kansas City International Airport since 2003 although it was originally fee-based.

Wi-Fi access allows an Internet connection without the physical attachment to a data port. Laptop computer users with a Wi-Fi compatible Network Interface Card can connect to the service anywhere in the terminals, hold rooms, concourses, ticket counter queues, restaurants and concession areas.
