Autumn Rail Offer - Herfsttoer

Today I was at the railway station and was happy to see that NS (Dutch Railways) have a special autumn offer. (not very special as they have had the same offer for the past few years).

NS Ticket Office

NS HERFSTTOER

It is a one-day travel card for ...

Directions

Another helpful thing to know when getting around Amsterdam is directions.  People are helpful, and usually speak English, but it’s annoying to have to ask everything all the time. Plus, in my experience, Dutch is very often surprisingly similar to English. So here are a few words to know to help you get around.

The compass directions are: North = noord, South = zuid, East = oost, West = west.  Left ...

Visit to the Stedelijk Museum

Fred and I spent Sunday afternoon at the Stedelijk [stayed-uh-lik] Museum, which has been temporarily moved from it’s home on Museumplein in Amsterdam to a building near Centraal Station. The new building used to be the main post office and also houses Club 11, which is supposedly the best view of Amsterdam that one can get while enjoying a cocktail. The Stedelijk is the Amsterdam museum that is ...

Wild in Amsterdam

Crocs

Yesterday was one of the sunniest and warmest days of the summer in Amsterdam so far. Luckily, it just so happened to fall on a Saturday. Scott and I took full advantage and went to Europe's largest zoo, Artis Zoo. It is full of gardens and animals from every continent. I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking...

Venice of the North

canal-boat-theran.jpg
Scott and I live on one of the most photographed corners in all of Amsterdam. Our apartment is on the corner of two canals and has magnificent views. We get the pleasure of watching different boats going by from fiberglass runabouts to the small pedal boats. The other day we were even lucky enough to see someone riding by in a giant clog.

Besides these ...

Heineken Experience

 beer-is-good-1.jpg

On Thursday, Jess and I decided to go the way the tourists go and enjoy a day at the Heineken Experience. It is the old brewery that leads people through the history of the beer from day one to the present. We didn't know what to expect, but were pleasantly surprised to find it was interactive and rather fun. The self-guided tour explains the history ...

Under the Sea (with Jess)

Dolphin Folk

After a whirlwind hiatus to the states, I was in relax mode upon getting back to Amsterdam. My friend, Jess, was in town from St. Paul visiting so Scott and I took her to our local coffeeshop, Dolphins.

Upon walking into Dolphins, you enter a world below the sea. The walls look like coral reef and there is a blue that takes over ...

Den Haag

hague-2.jpg

Today Theran and I took a day trip to Den Haag (The Hague). It only took about an hour to get there by train, which is the perfect place to read the paper as Theran demonstrates.

When we were there we took in a couple of museums including Mauritshuis which holds Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring and a few Rembrandts. We ...

Theran in Amsterdam

inside-schreirestoren.jpg
One of Scott's high-school friends, Theran, is in town and we explored places in the city today while Scott was at work. Theran did his research before he came and had a list of places he wanted to see- one of them being Schreierstoren.

Schreierstoren was part of the medieval wall in Amsterdam that dates back into the late 1400's. Located close to central station ...
