Shakespeare and Company
Shakespeare and Company is a bookaphiles dream come true. Thousands of books, old and new and crammed into book shelves. The store was opened in 1951 by an American, George Whitman, who found himself in Paris after World War 2. Not wanting to return home he studied at the Sorbonne. After amassing a collection of English books he opened the store.
The store is a cozy chaotic mess of books. Everywhere you look you find books crammed into every nook and cranny possible. However this is what makes the store so charming. I found myself in the store on my last night in Paris. This was intentional, as my passion for books would have kept me in the store and off the streets of Paris had I dared to wander into earlier. The store is the perfect haven. The store is always hosting events, whether it be a reading from an author or a group gathering.
If I lived in Paris there is no doubt that I would spend many hours inside the store. Given that the staff speaks English it is easy to navigate your way around the store and get help when searching for a title.
