Berthillon Ice Cream Store
Almost every tour guide book I have read will tell you to visit Berthillon for ice cream. The books inevitably describe the line ups that can be seen down the street forming at the entrance of the store. Berthillon can be found on Ile St. Louis, the small island behind Ile Cite. After many visits to Paris I decided to pay a visit to Berthillon.
I was staying on Ile St. Louis and knew that if I did not visit the ice cream shop this time I would never go. The island is only a few blocks long so you could not miss the shop. It was the beginning of December when I was in Paris, not exactly ice cream season but I was determined to go to Berthillon and taste their ice cream.
The advantage of visiting an ice cream shop in December is there are no crowds to battle. The choices of ice cream all seemed delicious. Eventually I settled on sampling two-gingerbread and prune armanac. The prune armanac was incredible. Armanac is a French brandy. The prunes had been marinated in armanac.
It may have been December and the wind outside was blowing. However the ice cream at Berthillon was everything I had been anticipating.
If you do not have time to make it to the shop, Berthillon ice cream is sold at many shops throughout Paris. You will not be disappointed.
