Galeries Lafayette.

Galeries Lafayette.

This luxe department store goes above and beyond to give customers the royal treatment from the moment they walk in. Translators, guest lounges - Japanese tourists get their own - a deluxe grocery and even private weekly fashion shows make clear that this is no ordinary mall. But by far my most favorite luxury is the domed ceiling, a resplendant mass of gold and stained glass radiating dazzle and shimmer down to the awed patrons below.

If you can pull your eyes away long enough to shop, remember to use the 10% discount card found in most Galeries Lafayette maps (the hotels Majestic, Raphael and Regina distribute them, though you may find them elsewhere) and to get your tax refund before you leave. To reserve a place at the fashion show (it's free!), e-mail welcome@galerieslafayette.com or call +33 1 42 82 36 40. Shows are every Friday at 3pm in the Salon Opera on the 7th floor, and include a commentary in English.

Fraud and Poor Customer Service at Galeries Lafayette

Buyers, be aware of poor customer service at the Galeries Lafayette Paris store. A store clerk defrauded me of 350 Euros last year. After I signed the receipt for my visa, he said it was declined and asked me to pay in cash. I did so. When I came back home in Canada 2 weeks later, my visa was debited for the same amount. Basically the store clerk made me pay twice. I have a witness that I was able to track and despite his testimony, the management of the store never acknowledged my complaint. I spent 6 months talking to my Canadian bank and to Visa International. After a lot of digging, Visa found a proof that I had paid in cash, confirming the fact that I had paid twice for the same transaction. Despite this evidence, Galeries Lafayette didn’t do anything to apologize or to correct the situation. I used to go there and spend a good part of my shopping budget every time I am in Paris, but this will no longer happen. Now I have switched to Printemps.
