Hungry? Thirsty? Feel Like Dancin'?
Brimming with a sort of Asian-Bohemian-inspired ambiance, Charlie Birdy is the best of both (or all) worlds. During the week (now every night from 4-8 p.m. also happy hour and 50% off of drinks), they feature live music ranging from jazz to blues to funk, and on weekends a DJ named Joachim spins the Grease soundtrack, Nirvana and AC/DC in between interesting house mixes and all of the popular dance singles of the moment. There is almost always an open table, and plenty of room to dance if the mood strikes you (in fact, it’s encouraged by a near ritual of the barkeepers rendition of the Village People’s classic “YMCA,” complete with costumes and dancers on the bar). Although located just off the Champs-Élysées on the rue Boétie, it’s never quite packed, it’s always just right.
Upstairs, the walls are a deep scarlet and candles provide the perfect amount of intimate lighting. Although this color-scheme seems to be very trendy at the moment in Paris, CB mixes it up with the addition of a colorful (and comfortable) lounge area complete with couches that could’ve come from a bollywood film. The stage is transformed on weekends into additional seating, and the bar’s logo reflected in pink light behind it adds to the ambiance.
Downstairs you’ll find the newly dubbed “Ice Bird Bar” which boasts 60s style round velvet lined booths (think straight out of an Austin Powers film) and a different music selection (normally more hip-hop oriented) on the weekend.
Sunday is the day of CB’s “Gospel Brunch,” where, for around 15€, you can enjoy a satisfying meal accompanied by soul music belted out by the best in Paris. The food at CB is excellent, although the portions are rather small (best bet is a burger̷
And the prices are, unfortunately, not.
Perfect for any occasion, whether you feel like having a casual drink accompanied by some great live music or dancing until 4am with the other night owls of Paris, CB is my kind of bar.
