5 Tips to Get Along with (Almost) Every Parisien!

If you plan to travel to Paris anytiime soon here are a few things I have learned that will make it much easier for you.

  1.   Don't act like a tourist!  This is first and foremost, you are not in your own country and you must not forget that.  Resist the urge to compare everything with the way its is back home.  To make the most of your time in Paris, try to fit into the new culture and don't fight it.  Sit back, relax and you may even find you start to enjoy the unique ways things are done and the sometimes old-world mentality of the people here.  Sit back, relax and you may find you may even start enjoying yourself.  When you do experience trouble with a bit of 'culture-clash', get over it fast and don't get upset whatever you do.  Learn to laugh at yourself.

  2.  Always greet everyone with "Bonjour" or "Bonsoir" (in the evening) and make sure to follow it with Madame or Monsieur. It is essential to add this after your Bonjour or Bonsoir.    You will hear it often, in the cafe, the store hotel, absolutely every French person including teenagers say this in greeting.  The French are sticklers for it.

  3.  Always say "Please" and "Thank you".  The two magic words in every language and culture that I'm sure your mother taught you about.  Say these without fail.  In this country you will soon learn that the little courtesies will take you far.

  4.  If you need help you must ask in a certain way if you want the best response.  "Excuisez-moi, Madame or Monsieur, de vous deranger mais j'ai une probleme."  Excuse me but I have a problem.  This phrase is found in a fabulous book by Polly Platt called 'French or Foe'.  Its an excellent, funny read that explores the complexities of the French and their culture.  According to Platt, it works everytime.  First you excuse yourself and let them know you are not demanding something from them and you will have their attention.  Then you can ask your question.  Also, after that first opening line or any other time be sure to ask , "Parlez-vous Anglais?" before you start babbling about where to find the Metro Hotel De Ville or what is the best time to to see the view from the Arc De Triomphe?  Never assume they all speak English.

  5.  Learn some basic French phrases.  Buy a good Phrasebook with a French/English Dictionary in the back and memorize some key phrases to get you by.  Not only will it help you to be understood and get around but it helps you feel a little less helpless - and anything that does that is a good thing.  Keep them on the tip of your tongue and when you are struggling to order a sandwich or get directions to Montemarte you will have much better luck navigating the City.

Keep these five things in mind and you will have a much easier time of it.  So grab your phrasebook and let Paris be your friend!
