Shao Lin Martial Arts
Cheh Chang, China 1974, 111 min
In 1975 Gilbert & George presented Shao Lin Martial Arts as a 'living sculpture' at the Collegiate Theatre in London's Soho. Many of the artists' early works feature them in kung fu poses. The film, starring Gordon Liu and Billy Tang, is one of the first to focus its narrative on the heroes' martial arts training.

The Old Curiosity Shop
Thomas Bentley, UK 1934, 105 min
Gilbert & George's favourite film, this adaptation of Charles Dickens's The Old Curiosity Shop tells the story of how a shopkeeper and his granddaughter are intimidated by their evil landlord, Quilip. Eventually they decide to flee but Quilip follows them. Successfully evoking the spirit of the book, this film is still a treat.
