Down in the Dumps

Yesterday was a scorcher here across the pond. Gettin' my runnin' around done early was the plan, so I could live the afternoon, like a beach. First thing in the morning, I had a hankering for a tea and a bagel so I warmed up the old truckster and took a trip into the local town.

I thought because it was hot, all of the tourists would have been hanging outside of town at one of the beaches. "Not so!" said the wish I was blind today, man. They were swarming all over town and especially at the doughnut shop, where my beloved bagel lie on the otherside of the long line up. So close and yet so far away.

I guess the tourists have a right to be there; they help the economy and all that jazz but you know how it is. You love tourists when you are one and you can't stand them when you're not. Just like when you're a driver and curse pedestrians, bikers, tractors etc., but not when the shoe is on the other foot. Besides that, the line-up gave me a chance to sort out my nickels and dimes for payment.

Like I said, yesterday sure was hot to trot as in 32 degrees, but I'm not complaining as it's much better than the rain, no sun, no fun weather we've been receiving. I even went for a kayak ride and waded a bit in the water, while the neighbor swam. She told me the lake was warm and she was correct. It looks like it's keeping up, so I'll be breaking out my dingy and swimming today.

I have to be careful of stepping on broken glass though, because the water-bed directly in front of my parent's house was once home to an old dump. That's right, but it's not as bad as it seems because I've discovered old bottles and baby shoes on various mini-underwater expeditions. Just call me Jacques Cousteau.

Anyhow, staying on the dump theme, when I got back from swimming yesterday, my mom needed to borrow my truck to take some old trash to the local dump. I decided to go with her because I don't trust her driving the precious truckster. We took the 8 km scenic trek to this dump, also known as rat's paradise, and were actually greeted by a guy that we know.

He told us how to sort stuff out, which bin to drop our junk off in, drive here, drive there, pay up etc. He also mentioned that he'd actually collected some cool stuff over the years, others had deemed junk. One man's trash is another man's treasure?  After about five minutes of throwing out tires, wires and windows we were ready to roll. Boy it sure was smelly.

It kind of took me back to the days when my girlfriend and I used to rummage through various old dumps, as a hobby. Our trash of choice was old milk bottles. We'd find them and then set up yard sales and sell them for a dollar or two. Looking back, I wish we just would have kept them.

It doesn't have to be that difficult if you're looking for some collectibles this weekend in Copenhagen. Why not visit the Arts & Crafts Market, where you'll find hundreds of ceramic, glass, textiles, wood and jewellery art for your viewing and buying pleasure.
