Gone Fishin'

Help Me.........

Aww, the good old summertime! I can fondly remember as a child, living on the waterfront on Lake Ontario, inspired my friends and I to swim every single day. Yes, we swam until our little hands were as wrinkled as an old lady's. Swimming was pretty satisfying for awhile, until I noticed that myriads of tourists fishing looked like they were having a whale of a time. I'd felt perhaps, I was missing the boat, so to speak.

One day, I had the urge to go fishing, but at that time I didn't have a fishing rod. My Dad thought we could create a makeshift fishing pole by taking a twig and some binder twine and walah, we had a first class fishing rod. The next step was to find some worms. That didn't take long because there were loads of them in the garden.

Then my father proceeded to show me a secret spot, where he used to fish as a kid. It was a thick tree trunk that jutted horizontally out over the water a bit. So, it was at that moment that I started my fishing hobby. The only problem was that there was only one fish that was interested in my worm. It was a huge carp. I'm not sure how large it was, but at the time it looked about half of my height and double my weight. I had no interest in taking it on, and it just wouldn't go away. Picture Captain Quint on the boat in the movie "Jaws", as he was trying to reel that monster shark in. I had the same feeling of terror.

Needless to say, I kind of lost interest in the fishing trend after that traumatic episode, and didn't do much of it afterwards. Besides that, swimming and fishing have kind of gone by the wayside back home, because the lakes are getting so polluted. Advisers, who have analysed the lake, have warned that eating certain fish drawn from it, are unsafe. High levels of mercury, PCBs, pesticides, dioxins and furanes were found in fish such as salmon, trout and carp.

Despite this grim news, I decided not long ago to start eating more fish and less red meat, as I'd heard that various studies demonstrated that overdoing it on red meat can cause cancer. I guess it's the lesser of two evils, or at least I'd hoped so.

Anyhow, that's another story and another side of the world, and we have to eat something right? So if you're in Copenhagen, and you have a craving for some fish, then there's a popular fish bar in town that offers many varieties of fish including crabs and muscles. "Kødbyens Fiskebar," is also well known for its first class chefs, reasonable prices and designer chairs.
