Wild Waupoos Happenings
I'm sailing away in Waupoos the area where I grew up, sailing around in a dingy as I did in my youth but this time amongst the luxury yachts. I've been here for all of July and have been bird watching, playing with the community dog and sun bathing, thus the blogless month.
Waupoos, for those of you who don't know is a growing wine region in Prince Edward County, Ontario. It reminds me a bit of the south of France but with blizzard-like winters. It's even being referred to as the Muskokas of the South? Funny how times change. I don't recognize many people here anymore. Although, it's always been a beautiful area when we were growing up our neighbors were cut from a different cloth. They were, how can I say it, a little more "entertaining."
They thought nothing of holding wild parties every weekend, passing out with the music blaring and cavorting with the criminal element. My family and I were actually exchanging stories with some of the other people who still live in the area. I can remember once when these entertaining neighbors invited a motorcycle gang down for the weekend. I think they're known as the Hogs or something of that sort. Anyhow, needless to say it was a little intimidating walking up the road with hundreds of leather clad, beer swigging, Harley driving bandits scattered about on the neighbors property.
Then there was the time the police came to our door and said stay in the house because there was a mad man running in our apple orchard wielding a knife. I'd say this group of policeman got lucky because other weekly visits by the police resulted in the officers being attacked by apples or their car being rocked, rattled and rolled. You're probably getting a picture here of "not much respect for authority."
We watched these going ons for years and years with frustrating, weekly calls to the police until one happy day, or sad day however you look at it when their house burnt down. Noone was hurt and our neighbors were glad to escape with their case of beer and the family photo album. We didn't shed a tear when they decided to relocate and ever since the property has stood eerily quiet and empty, perhaps to be used as another vineyard..
