Trashing Roskilde Festival?
Give a hoot and don't pollute because the owl's everywhere. That was a great anti-littering campaign if you can remember that. It's still ringing in my ears many years on. You see, as a kid we thought nothing of occasionally tossing trash out onto the streets or out of the car window for that matter. That was until people starting wising up and they began running TV campaigns like the aforementioned.
Now, while we are on the topic of trash and first and foremost, I'm not talking about the musical acts here. As I mentioned a while back there are plenty of festivals happening this summer all over Denmark. Roskilde Festival is probably the best known of them all. Neil Young will be performing there as well as one of my favourite bands, that being the Kings of Leon.
According to reports, last year's festival produced a record breaking 3,000 tons of trash left behind from guests of the infamous rock festival. Now come on, I've worked with children quite a bit and the most popular phrase throughout the day it seemed was "Okay, it's time to clean up," but the difference is these were little children only between 3 and 5 years old, so they kind of had an excuse to be messy.
Apparently at Roskilde last year, people chucked beer cans, left their tents and perhaps their brains behind after the festival. At the end of it all, it looked like the local dump. Not only that, it was costly to clean up, around seven million Danish crowns, which is around one million dollars to you and me.
Just think what good causes that money could have gone to? Or it could have been used to attract more acts, more music and more happy memories. In fact, they just cleaned up the last of the litter a little over a month ago, only to prepare for the next onslaught which happens July 3rd to 6th .
So this year let's make it a point not to trash the festival! Gosh darnit that owl could be anywhere even at Roskilde..Now that would be some act to follow..
