A Night at the Ballet with Onegin
We had a wonderful time at the ballet last night. We went to see "Onegin," by John Cranko at The Royal Danish Theatre. Yes, it was an exciting night at the ballet in more ways than one. We were about to be on our merry way when we realized that we had no tickets, a minor detail that we chose to forget. Anyhow, it was no problem as they were delivered to us in front of the theatre.
I was dropped off at the entrance of The Royal Theatre, to receive the ticket hand-off, while my partner in crime drove around trying to find a parking place. Once inside, we were a bit lost in the vast array of stairs, corridors and floors.
At first, we sat ourselves down in the wrong section but then managed to correct our error to find our second row seats on the first floor. These were actually good seats and provided a rather unobstructed view of the entire ballet.
Half way through the performance, during a break, we thought we smelled smoke, a figment of our imagination perhaps? Apparently not, as the fire brigade and police were rushed to the scene and apparently, somebody had been smoking a cigarette and dropped it into the ventilation system. No harm done, however and the show went on.
Now, to the actual subject of this blog, the ballet. Visually, it was lovely. The costumes and scenography were simple and delicate, while the classical music of Tjajkovskij played in the background. The ballet itself is a dramatic story of love, loss and jealousy. The heart and the soul of the story is about messing up your chance with that one true love, by not taking advantage of the situation while it's there.
Onegin, plays the male lead, portraying a "cad," if you will. In the beginning, the lovely young lady named Tatjana is very much after him but he basically brushes her off. To rub salt into an already open wound, he also blatantly flirts with another, right in front of Tatjana's heartbroken, little eyes. By the time Onegin realizes how much he cares for Tatjana, she has moved on with her life and fallen in love with another man.
So, is there still a chance for Onegin to turn things around with Tatjana or is it too little too late? Is Onegin's chance at true love lost forever? Hmm...that is the question.
This ballet runs until the 17th of May and is 2 hours and 20 minutes including breaks.
