Awards Shows Smorgasbord

Yesterday came and went and I missed the Danish Music Awards. I fell asleep at 7:00 p.m. yesterday if you can believe that and woke up at 6:00 a.m. today. I had this wild dream. I was surrounded by piles of books and mounds of papers. I couldn't figure out how to use my mobile phone and I had to access the Internet but it wouldn't work. I was supposed to be working and spent an hour trying to log on. Then I couldn't find my employer's telephone number. At the same time I was packing a suitcase and there were a group of kids playing in the background. Just a bizarre dream and I felt all stressed out when I woke up. Interesting though, a lot of the situations in it were pretty true to life and I think I know what it all means, maybe...hmmm strange.

Anyhow, back to this blog's topic, award shows. The big winner of last night's Danish Music Awards was Rapper/singer Natasja. She was nominated for five awards and won four of them. Unfortunately, she couldn't be there to collect her awards, as she was tragically killed in a horrific car accident in Jamaica, last year. Very sad story indeed, as she was only twenty-six years old, I believe.

One of the awards she won was this year's best album for "I denmark er jeg født," translated loosely to English, means "In Denmark I was born," which came out after Natasja passed away. The award for Denmark's best new name went to the Elektro/Rock band called "Dune." The year's Honour Award went to singer Anne Linnet. Among the reasons for her winning the award was that she provides a good example for new musicians because she has managed to stay grounded while at the same time reaching for the stars.

The U.K.'s Amy Winehouse is just as popular here as everywhere else in the world and won the year's best foreign album with her popular blues/funk style. Of course there were many more winners, too many to name here. Looks like if we missed the awards show we still have a chance to view it here.

Now, for the next big event, that is being televised all over the world tonight. Of course I'm talking about the "Oscars." I can't mention the Oscars without mentioning the Danish connection. I hope Christian E. Christiansen, Louise Vesth and all the good folks at Zentropa win for their short film, "Om Natten," or "At Night," so exciting. I will think positive thoughts but in case they do not take home the prize, well in my eyes they have won anyhow, as it was quite an achievement to be nominated. I mean, the competition is fierce and is just further proof of their extraordinary talent, this is for sure. As for Viggo Mortensen, nominated as best Actor for his role in Eastern Promises, good luck to him as well, I will cross my fingers, good luck.
