Flat Screen Fiasco

I am aching all over and I'll tell you why. The other day I was a busy bee working from home. Quite a few packages were being delivered and I'd have to get up and answer the door. It would only take a few minutes to sign and then I'd get right back to work. Not a problem so far. Spending a few minutes away from my job is acceptable but not much more than that, as I can't be away from the computer for too long before I fall way behind. The other day, I finished up my shift and there was yet another unexpected rap at the door. The polite delivery man looked me up and down and said, "Are you expecting a television set?" I said, "Yes" and he said "OK," and that was the end of our in-depth conversation.

Then there was an uncomfortable silence as we stared blankly at each other. I said rather unenthusiastically, "Do you need some help or...?" Not really expecting him to say yes (hoping he wouldn't is more like it) he said, "Yes, I would appreciate some help. It's a very large package."

So we went out to his transport truck and there was a box about 1.5 X 1.5 meters. I thought to myself, this guy has to be kidding. I don't work for the moving company, but okay so now it all made sense. I understood why he couldn't go it alone and I also got why he was checking me out earlier. He probably thought there is no way this weakling chickadee can help carry anything.

I held on to the TV while it was slowly lowered down on the lift, eventually landing on the pavement. We placed the TV on a wagon and stood in the middle of the parking lot, when of course a car came and was trying to get through but we were blocking its way.

We moved to the side and just kept on truckin'. Slowly but surely, and after plenty of complaining on my part, we eventually made it into the condominium complex only to be greeted by a flight of stairs. Trying to push the TV up the stairs was the worst bit by far. Oh my aching back. I'm sure this guy was thinking she is useless. He was a nice fellow though and we eventually completed our journey with the TV and he went on his merry way.

I got thinking afterwards though, what if I were a senior citizen or someone with a disability? They couldn't possibly expect that there is going to be someone physically able to help carry a huge box like that up a flight of stairs? If I had been working, I could not have taken a half hour out of my schedule to help move this TV.

So I was talking to someone who'd been through the same sort of scenario except he had to climb up two flights of stairs. He complained to the company and received some sort of compensation for his troubles.

Anyhow, in the end I was glad I could help (not really) because otherwise the TV would have had to go back half way across the country and I wouldn't be watching half Danish-Dish Viggo Mortensen in Lord of the Rings like I am right now as we speak!
