Madeleine, Phuket and Condolences

I've decided that today's blog will have little to do with Copenhagen but instead a mish mash of thoughts and feelings relating to two of the world's most recent events and talked about stories. First, the Madeleine McCann case. I, like many people have been following along with the case of the 4 year old British girl who disappeared while vacationing in Portugal with her parents and siblings. I know the statistics are rather disturbing -reportedly between 75- 90% of cases of children who disappear involves the parents.

The facts presented against the parents, Kate and Gary McCann are quite damning but I just don't believe it. (Reportedly, they are suspected of accidentally killing their daughter and covering it up.) First, I don't think they had time to murder their daughter, dispose of her, run back and forth to dinner without blinking an eye and chit chat with guests in between. Besides that the police haven't even located Madeleine's body. She may still be alive.

Secondly, I think that the DNA gathered is in question as the crime scene was compromised  from the get go. I know I'm not a forensic expert but I just don't believe it. Perhaps my arguments won't hold up in a court of law. I'm relying on intuition because my intuition tells me that the Mccanns are just not the sort to commit such a hideous crime. If I'm proven otherwise I'll eat my shirt. Even if they are to be charged and convicted, I probably still won't believe it.

The press has been particularly hard on the mother, Kate Mccann. But when the camera does a closeup of Kate McCann, I don't know about you but I don't see a drop of deception in her eyes. The Portuguese newspapers call her cold and aloof. I call her devastated and introspective.

The other topic I'd like to mention is yesterday's airplane crash at Phuket Airport in Thailand. As someone who has flown into that airport and been taken in by the charms of  the Thai people, I think this is just tragic. To make matters worse someone I know is in Thailand at the moment.

All I can remember him saying is that in September, he'd be taking an internal flight from Bangkok to Phuket, Bangkok to Phuket, Bangkok to Phuket and that statement keeps echoing in my ears. I wasn't sure which date. I'm not sure if he was sure of the date as he's a fly by the seat of his pants type of kid.

I checked the injured list and the passenger's list for that particular flight but his name is not on it. There are plenty of other names on it though, and it seems sad that their lives have been reduced to a list of names on a piece of paper. My heart goes out to all of the people who are either directly or indirectly related to this tragic event.
