SAS Cancels Flights
SAS Airlines is synonymous with security and safety. However, an episode that occurred here last weekend left a few people shaking in their shoes. A Dash-8 airplane was forced to make a crash landing in Aalborg Airport here in Denmark because the right side of the landing gear gave way. It was pretty horrific to watch it on TV. I can't imagine what the experience was like for the passengers. No one was hurt but it could have easily turned into a disaster. Flames were rolling out of the right side of the plane but they were quickly extinguished.
Most people assumed that this was a one time event but a few days after that another Dash-8 had to make an emergency landing, this time in Lithuania. Apparently, it was the landing gear again. Luckily, no one was injured in this episode either. It was then decided by SAS that the entire Dash-8 fleet should be grounded pending further investigation. This decision is going to cost SAS over 100 million Danish crowns. The entire episode is leaving passengers high and dry trying to make other travel arrangements. There is a Canadian connection to this story as these particular planes were manufactured in Canada. Hopefully, the problems will be resolved soon.
