Chaos in Copenhagen Continues
Earlier this year I blogged about a group of young people's fight for the right to occupy a "youth house" situated in Copenhagen. To make a long story short, once upon a time there was a house on Jagtvej 69 in Copenhagen that a group of young people used for a variety of social activities. They never owned the house but were permitted to use it as they will. The house was an integral part of the community and all walks of life used to enjoy the facilities.
Anyhow, the house was sold and the kids were told to leave. They fought a hard fight which included riots but eventually were forced to abandon the home they had grown to love and the house was eventually demolished.
Since then, there have been a variety of small demonstrations, but over the past few days these demonstrations have become progressively more violent and destructive. Politicians have discussed finding the kids a new house over the past few months.
The public sentiment has always generally been with the kids but in the past few days public sympathy has understandably turned against them. Saturday night 21 boutiques on Nørrebrogade were vandalized, fires were set in the middle of the street etc. There were 69 demonstrators and according to reports some of these kids have threatened to continue their path of destruction on this coming Thursday night.
Of course, it's not all of the kids who are involved in these violent activities but as they say, "a few bad apples spoils the bunch" and the violent methods used in the past few days might just eliminate their chances of ever getting the new "youth house" they so desire.
