Public Enemy Numero Uno
I've been reminiscing about our little road trip through Europe. We've done this before in one shape or another and it usually takes us a day to get to Italy. This time it actually took quite a bit longer than it usually does. When we'd finally made it to our "destination anywhere," which was Venice it was two days on. We'd been making our way slowly but surely through Europe and took a few more breaks than we usually do. At around 3 a.m. early on Saturday morning we decided to stop at a gas station and accidentally fell asleep until 6 a.m. Actually, although not ideal it's not as bad as it sounds. There were loads of other travellers who slept over there so at least we felt somewhat safe.
Like I said in yesterday's blog, upon leaving Germany and entering Austria things began to take a turn for the worst. We were warned before we left Denmark that there could be long line-ups and there were. There might have been a car accident or two in the mix as well we're not sure. We waited hours in a line-up and kind of gave up for the night and decided to stay at a quaint little family hotel in Austria called Familie Rainer. We had a nice dinner, slept well and then took off at about 10 a.m. the next day.
It went ok until we met public enemy #1 in Italy which are toll roads. Long line-ups ensued. (Note to self avoid toll roads like the plague.) I know they earn a bazillion dollars by charging motorists on average between 3 and 10 Euros a pop but it would be more convenient for us if the toll road fee was just soaked up in the taxes and there were no such thing as toll roads. Easier said than done I suppose. I'm not sure if that will happen anytime soon but it's just wishful thinking. All the delays aside, the toll roads and traffic jams were worth it in the end though because we were in lovely Venice, one of the most romantic places on planet earth!
