Toilet Toll

Our trip is off to a late start. We planned on leaving at around 3 a.m. on Friday the 13th but superstition aside, the gods must have been telling us something because we didn't get away until about 8 p.m. We overslept and then a bunch of other circumstances occurred that prohibited us from getting on with the road trip. Everything happens for a reason I suppose. I don't know what the reason for this was though.

We drove to the ferry Puttgarden which connects Denmark to Germany. Warning long line-ups! We ordered our tickets in advance otherwise we would have been waiting for hours in the long line-up with the rest of the sorry souls. Once departing the ferry, we drove through Germany and it wasn't long before we had to take a pee break. It doesn't seem to matter how many times we take this tour I never seem to remember about the public toilet arrangements in Germany. Like in other European countries, you have to pay. While sitting in the car trying to sort out my Canadian loonies from the Euros - they look quite a bit alike - I witnessed a woman tearing into the bathroom like her hair was on fire. Suddenly she stopped dead in her tracks. Ah ha! I thought, been there done that. I could read her mind; the dazed and confused look on her face said it all. "Oh I have to pay to use the toilet?" She stood and stared for a moment then ran back to her car, to get the proper change I assumed. She then scurried back to the entrance in front of the bathroom, deposited her money in the machine waited for the security bar to drop but it didn't. Another two and then three more attempts did nothing to allow her to enter. Finally, she looked right and left, ducked under the security bar and quickly made her way to the toilet. I wasn't in the mood to tackle this obstacle so I decided to wait for the next stop. :-)
