Just Another Snake in the Grass?

One of the many snakes you'll see on the Island Safari Tour in Thailand I'm just completing a project about children's drawings and have been reading a bit about Carl Gustav Jung's work. He's an earlier psychoanalyst inspired by Sigmund Freud. His theory goes something like this. He believed that our unresolved conflicts show up in our dreams and drawings. Similar to anger, he believed, if they are left unchecked and unresolved, they can trickle over into the rest of our lives and affect us negatively.

Anyhow, what I'm getting at is this. While in Thailand, I dreamt that while walking in the woods, my path was blocked by a huge snake. This dream is understandable because that same day we were on the "Island Safari Tour," where guides pointed out poisonous snakes in trees etc. Also, they'd informed us that 40% of the snakes in Thailand are poisonous. So, according to Jung, my dream was probably just my unconscious mind dealing with the episode. He would chalk this up to my mind's way of restoring my psychic equilibrium.

Now I'll get to the meat and potatoes of the story. Until recently, I enjoyed going for regular walks in the woods here in Denmark. Since returning from Thailand however, I've only taken the walking tour twice, partially due to laziness, not making the time & partially due to a strange "déjà vu experience."

I usually took the same route on this hike but the last two times I tackled it, guess what I encountered? A black snake blocking my path, both times in the same area! I'm not sure what Jung would say about that. Now the story would be made a little more exciting if it was as huge as I'd imagined in my dream but in fact it was only about 50 cm long. Now, I'm not trying to put the fear of God into you because frankly, before this episode, I'd never seen a snake in the wild, all of the time I've lived here.

I didn't get a close-up view of the snake in question - too busy running - but there is of course, a harmless grass snake that lives in these parts that is black or dark brown, always with two white or yellow markings on the back of its head. The other type, which happens to be the only poisonous snake in Denmark, is what's known as a "Viper." They are brown/black with a zigzag on their back or just plain black. So you see it's easy to create your own "Island Safari/Adventure," here in Denmark.

Above is a picture of a snake I took in Thailand. Is it a Banded Krait? A Laotian Wolf Snake? To be honest, I'm not sure but very likely poisonous.

P.S. To Gonomad(s) Max and Paul, if you happen to stumble across this blog..Have fun in Copenhagen!
