Sunglasses - Quality vs. Quantity
Summer is just around the corner. It's time to break out the bathing trunks, suntan oil.....rrrr.. I mean sunscreen factor 8,000 and the coolest sunglasses you can find. I've been around the block when it comes to sunglasses and unfortunately, I've invested in plenty of lemons. Case in point, the ones I'm wearing in the photo there. In Denmark I purchased a pair for 50 crowns($9 U.S.) at a discount department store and paid about the same back home for another pair of cheapies at Kmart. Well, I'm not bashing discount department stores as I know they can carry quality products as well, but these particular sunglasses didn't last long.
You know the story, one of the arms fell off, a piece of the nose grip broke away, a lens fell out, and it all didn't matter anyway because the lenses didn't really feel like they were protecting my eyes at all. Being the glutton for punishment that I am, last year I bought another cheap pair. As pictured above, these are so big; they fall off of my face. The scratched up lenses wouldn't protect my eyes from UV rays if I was wearing them in the pitch dark.
I'm not one who goes up in labels or designer names for most things except occasionally for watches and shoes. When it comes to sunglasses though, I've learned that quality costs. I have an Italian friend who insists that Gucci sunglasses are the only way to go. I don't know about that, but around 13 years ago I invested a pretty penny in another Italian brand of sunglasses called "Ventura" and I still have them today. I don't even think they are a popular make but they sure are made well.
You can't kill them. I've stomped on them, slept on them, spit on them, kicked them around, fried them up in a pan and they will not be broken! These sunglasses are the best but it's time I put them to rest. I've just recently purchased a pair of Ray-Bans. Ray-Ban is synonymous with quality in sunglasses, so I hope these ones last as long as my Italian "Ventura's" have. If not I'll gladly bring them out of hiding again.
