Driving for Dollars in Copenhagen
I'm off to Thailand in a few weeks and am really looking forward to it. The plan is to enjoy the sun, do a story on "Life after the Tsunami," visit schools to see what activities educators implemented to help the kids deal with the aftermath of the Tsunami. Oh ya, and how could I forget the best part, visit the dentist.
Anyhow, I just read about a fella who came up with a creative, albeit illegal way to fund his winter escape to Thailand. Known as "Denmark's Worst Driving Teacher," he established a so-called "Motorcycle Driving School" in Copenhagen.
Prospective students contacted him via a website. Ofcourse the guy insisted that they pay the $6,400 DKK ($1,000 U.S.) fee up front, which was suppose to include theory, practical training and eventual driver's license. When push came to shove and the students demanded their promised training, facts were vague with regards to where and when they should start, and contacting this apparent con-artist was virtually impossible.
The Danish Driving Teacher's Association hands are tied because the accused wasn't a member so it looks like the victims aren't going to get their money back. Police estimate that this fella ripped students off to the tune of $300,000 Danish crowns, that's $60,000 U.S. dollars to you and me.
If you understand Danish check out the full story here filed under "Danmarks værste kørelærer." At the very least you can view his rather dazed and confused face.
