Summer Dreaming in Copenhagen
Well, it is snowy and cold here in Denmark, approximately 3 degrees. I’ve tried to enjoy it as much as possible by taking strolls in the woods, building a snow fort and making snow angels with some children I work with.
To be honest though, I’d rather be in 30 degree weather soaking up the sun. Winter has attacked with a vengeance the last week or so here in Denmark, which got me thinking about my upcoming trip to the Cape Verde Islands.
Cape Verde is located west of Africa and east of Brazil and temperatures average around 25 degrees. I’ll be heading to the island of Sal, specifically to the area known as Santa Maria so I’ve been reading up on what to do there etc. Apparently, Sal is the most developed of the Cape Verde islands as far as tourism goes and is where the international airport is located.
Because of Sal's tourists, there is no lack of places to eat and drink. There are plenty of bars and restaurants, some of which host live local music. Watching the locals perform their brand of music and dance is something I’m particularly looking forward to, as it is a fusion of Brazilian and African influences. Scuba Diving is fast becoming a popular activity because of the ocean’s abundant sea life. Kitesurfers and Windsurfers enjoy world class breaks at an area known as Ponte Preta.
Even though Sal is incredibly barren and flat it offers beautiful white sandy beaches. For many years Danes and Europeans alike have flocked to islands like Tenerife and Lanzarote for their time in the sun but the Cape Verde government is hoping to change all that by turning Cape Verde into a tourist mecca to rival other winter getaways islands.
P.S. If you are heading to Cape Verde, I have heard through the grapevine that the schools are happy to receive pencils, pencil crayons, pencil sharpeners and the like, as these items are in short supply.
