Take a Break at Vienna's Cafe Demel

Cafe Demel remains one of Vienna's best confectioners.
While the cafe at the Hotel Sacher might be more well-known, the Cafe Demel has a more classic Viennese cafe feel and a dignified history. Nestled in a cozy little shop with high ceilings and elegant antique decor, the Cafe Demel is the perfect place to stop for a Melange (Viennese coffee) and a bite to eat. A glass display case offering a multitude of more than 20 different varieties of cake beckons to patrons from just inside the door. The Anna Cake, a thick chocolate cake with a hint of orange liquer, remains the house speciality, while seasonal offerings like the peach streusel are also an excellent choice. Seated at the bar or in the main dining room or smoker's lounge, the Cafe Demel is a convenient and traditional place to take a break inside the cobblestone streets of Vienna's inner ring. The cafe also contains a wing devoted to items for take-home purchase, like luxurious sugar encrusted flowers and rich chocolates, and a large glass-encased workshop in the back room affords great views of the confectioners in action. Historically, Demel was the royal confectioner for the ruling family of Austria, the Hapsburgs. For more information, visit www.demel.at.
