Vienna's Volksoper Has Entertainment for Everyone

the Volksoper's main entrance
Vienna's Volksoper (People's Opera) has consistently high quality operas and other musical theater productions for a fraction of the price of a night at the Staatsoper. Tickets to the Volksoper's entertaining performances are much cheaper and don't need to be purchased very far in advance to guarantee a seat. The Volksoper does have a couple of minor drawbacks though. Occasionally, the subtle rumbling of the U6 metro line nearby can be noticed during a quiet scene and the male lead roles are occasionally played (though superbly) by women. Scheduled operas for the remainder of the 2007 performance year include The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte, with music by Mozart), Boccaccio (a romantic comedy with Italian flair), and The Bat (Die Fledermaus, a humorous opera about Viennese high society and trickery). To reach the Volksoper conveniently, take the U6 metro line, trams 40, 41, or 42, or bus 40A to the Währingerstrasse station. For more information, visit www.volksoper.at.
