Vienna's Military History Museum

Vienna's Military History Museum (Heeresgeschichtliches Museum) is housed in an imposing stone building dating back to the 1850's and flaunting a combination of Byzantine, Hispano-Moorish, and Neo-Gothic styles. Historically, it is Vienna's first official museum. The museum offers five major exhibits, including a history of the Hapsburg empire, Austrian naval history, and artifacts from World Wars I and II.

The Austrian naval history exhibit in particular is fascinating, complete with an impressively detailed cross-section model of Austria's top warship and historical information about protecting the Danube from invasion. The WWI and WWII exhibits are haunting and full of uniforms, weapons, and photographs. One memorable item from the exhibit is a baby crib outfitted with gas mask protection. In addition to the regular indoor exhibits, the museum also features an outdoor full-size tank collection for public viewing.

Regular admission costs €5.10. Photo permits and audio guides are each €1.50 extra. To reach the museum, take the U1 metro line, buses 13A or 69A, or trams 18, D, or O to Südtirolerplatz or Südbanhof. The museum is located in close proximity to the Belvedere Palace.
