Berry Picking Along Vienna's Danube Canal

Wild blackberries grow along the canal.

Berry picking season has arrived along the Danube River Canal. Help yourself to a sweet summery handful by taking the U4 metro line to Friedensbruecke. A short walk about 400m north along the canal brings you to the first berry bushes. More lie further down the path. The bushes can also be reached by taking a free Citybike (1 euro registration fee) from the Schottenring metro station and riding down the path until the berries come into view. Just be sure to return the bike within an hour to avoid fees.

Wearing shoes, socks, long pants, and a long-sleeve shirt is recommended to avoid thorn scratches. If you're hoping to gather enough to make jam or a pie, don't forget to bring containers. The best conditions for finding the most ripe berries is after lots of hot sunny weather and a bit of rain. Also, if the police happen to drive by and ask for a "Bewilligung" (permit), they are just kidding so don't panic.
