Sun & Swimming on Vienna's Danube

Swimmers sit on the bank of the Danube.
During the hottest days of summer, the banks of the Danube River is where hundreds of the Viennese come to cool off. Children and adults alike enjoy the swimming and sunbathing atmosphere along the Danube ("Donau" in German). Easy-access cement steps provide a comfortable way to get into the water at a few spots along the bank. Many swimmers also jump in from the retaining wall or wade in over the grass and rocks. Unfortunately, there is no sand to speak of along the Danube, so beach towels lay along the grassy and paved areas along the river.
The river has a current, which keeps it relatively clean, but beware of drifting. There is no designated swim area and no lifeguard on duty. It is common to see ducks, swans, fish, and even tiny innocuous jellyfish in the water. However, it is also possible to catch a glimpse of nude bathers, so be prepared for that. Many sections of the Danube are free body culture zones, where clothing is optional. "FKK" is painted on the footpaths to indicate these areas. Another thing to watch out for is bits of glass on the pavement and in the grass - wearing sandals to the water's edge is recommended.
Numerous snack stands and small restaurants and bars offer refreshments and a shady break from the sun near the sunbathing and swimming areas. An ice cream cart also drives up and down the riverbank, making periodic stops along the way. The easiest ways to reach the Danube are with the U6 or U1 metro lines. The Handelskai and Neue Donau stops along the U6 are farther upstream and cleaner. The Donau Insel stop off of the U1 line is also a nice swimming area.
