Bike in Vienna for Free
Registering to use Vienna’s Citybikes is easy, budget-friendly and a great way to see the city. Vienna currently has 50 Citybike stations located within its city limits, including new stations and bikes near Schönbrunn Palace. About 40 Citybikes now sit across from Schönbrunn’s main entrance and 16 more lie just down the street at the Schönbrunn Bridge.
To use the system, you simply follow the instructions prompted on the Citybike terminal screen. Instructions in English are available. Each user needs a credit card, but the registration fee is only €1. If you bike for 1 hour or less, there is no extra cost. Biking longer than 1 hour costs €1 per extra hour. You can even return a bike within an hour, wait 15 minutes, and then take a bike back out for another hour for free. Tourists can also purchase a pass that enables Citybike use for a mere €2 for an entire day.
The stations are operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This proves especially helpful when going home from a club or bar late at night after the main public transportation has shut down. Conveniently, bike-only paths exist throughout the city, keeping bikers safe from car traffic. Maps are available at Citybike terminals and on the internet at www.citybikewien.at to show you where you can borrow and return bikes.
