Smart Outdoor Dining in Vienna

For pleasant outdoor Viennese dining, head to the Universitäts Bräu in the 9th district. The restaurant has a large open air seating area in the courtyard of the old general hospital, now part of the University of Vienna. The surrounding foliage and roomy picnic table seating make it an ideal place to meet for a drink at the end of the day or to leisurely enjoy an afternoon or evening meal.
The house-made beers all come with scholarly names like the Magistrate Märzen or the Dr. Pils – both of which are good. The food is also excellent. I recommend the Bräuhaus Schnitzel (a fried pork cutlet stuffed with cheese, bacon and mushrooms) and the Gratinierte Schinkenbrot (a large toasted slice of dark bread topped with ham, tomatoes and melted cheese). The rack of ribs and other grilled items that frequently pass from the outdoor grill station to the surrounding tables look tempting as well.
The clientele typically includes English-speaking university employees, creating a good atmosphere for visitors to blend with locals. Children will feel comfortable there too. A spacious children’s playground lies adjacent to the outdoor seating area. Reservations are accepted. For more information, visit www.unibrau.at/ .
