Vienna Garden Grandeur: Roman Temple and Thousands of Roses

Treat your senses with a stroll through Vienna’s Volksgarten. The abundant rose bushes there are currently in bloom and the array of varieties is staggering. Allow plenty of time to peruse the many different colors and aromas.

Of particular note are the Papageno, Stadt Wien (“City of Vienna”), and Champion varieties. The Papageno has a mild scent, but flaunts beautiful pink and red striping reminiscent of a peppermint stick. Huge and robustly red, the Stadt Wien emits a powerful fragrance like that of an empress’ perfume. The Champion, on the other hand, is smaller, pure white and exquisitely scented.

A walk along the Volksgarten paths adjacent to the rose garden reveals other notable sights. The commanding Doric Theseus-Temple in the middle of the Volksgarten is hard to miss. Either an authentic ruin or a replica, the temple has impressive Doric columns and an air of ancient tranquility. There are also a number of small pools (some with goldfish) and various other landscaping gems to admire.

For a direct route to the Volksgarten, take the U3 metro line or tram (“Strassenbahn”) 1 or 2 to Volkstheater.

And although you don't see it on the picture very well what is really amazing that all those chairs are not chained to poles or worse nor are stained by grafitty....
