Luminato: Toronto Festival of Arts and Creativity, June 1st-10th

The much-anticipated kickoff for the summer tourist season has begun—Luminato: Toronto Festival of Arts and Creativitiy 2007, began Friday June 1st, and continues until next Sunday, June 10th. Music, dance, theatre, film, literature, visual arts and design events are held daily across the city throughout the festival. Some events are exclusive world premieres with ticket prices ranging from $25 to $125, such as the celebrated collaboration of Leonard Cohen and Philip Glass, combining the talents of the poet and composer for their presentation of Book of Longing at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre. For those on a budget, many other events throughout the city are free of charge and family-friendly. Today, the Floating Artworks event at BCE Place, Union Station and the TD Centre, invites visitors of all ages to view gravity-defying art installations free of charge, as does the Muhtadi International Drumming Festival at Queen’s Park, where citizens and tourists can get down to the world beat of drums, celebrated as an instrument of cultural unity. Yesterday’s opening of the Lee-Chin Crystal at the ROM was also a free and hugely popular event, though the lineup for tickets wrapped around the north end of Queen’s Park and continued down to Trinity College on Hoskin Ave. For a full listing of events going on throughout Toronto until June 10th, check out the Luminato website, expertly organized and designed, which provides complete information on the wide variety of shows and venues for the festival.
