Doors Open Toronto May 26th-27th

One of this city's most fascinating cultural and historical events is Doors Open Toronto, running this weekend. Doors Open is a civic event held in a growing number of communities throughout Ontario during the spring and summer months every year, allowing the public to visit and explore a wide variety of buildings not normally accessible to the general population. Toronto was the first North American city to hold a Doors Open event, starting in the year 2000, and it has subsequently become a major attraction for both local residents and tourists. This year, the theme is sustainable, renewable and ‘green’ buildings—that is, structures which incorporate materials and designs that are energy efficient and eco-friendly. Some of the participating buildings downtown include the Beach Solar Laundromat on Queen East, with solar thermal panels providing heat for both the building and the laundry machines; the National Ballet School of Canada on Jarvis, which incorporates cutting-edge architecture with 19th-century heritage buildings; and a rare opportunity to see the inner workings of the CBC building, which houses administrative offices, television and radio studios on Front St. The event is free, with no registration required, and a list of buildings open for tours can be found on the city of Toronto website, listed below.
