Fran’s: A Toronto Tradition Since 1940

If you’re in town and looking for a good, cheap, satisfying meal, head to one of Fran’s two downtown locations. Named after the original owner, Fran’s has been operating in Toronto since 1940, and in all that time, the quality of their fare has remained high, while the prices have stayed low. The 100 Victoria St. location, directly opposite the famous Massey Hall, is always full after a show has let out of the renown concert venue, and the smaller location at 20 College St. near Younge is a perfect place for the foot-weary traveler to tuck in. The restaurant serves three square meals a day, with fluffy pancakes, or bacon and eggs, as well as omelets to order for breakfast (the Big Breakfast, only $9.95, is served all day), and a selection of hearty sandwiches (the famous chicken club is a favourite of mine), wraps and salads for the calorie-conscious, and traditional entrees for lunch and supper. Staples like the Franburger and Fran’s Fish and Chips have all the flavor you could hope for when you’re in the mood for simple, hearty, home cooking. The dishes are consistent in their excellence, the wait staff friendly and fast, and the décor truly reflects the best style the 40’s had to offer. Open 24 hours, you can satisfy that craving for a burger or milkshake long after the bars have shut their doors for the night.
