Ethiopian Cuisine

Located at 1184 Queen Street West (just a block East of Dufferin), is a little Ethiopian resturant named Addis Abbas, well-known among the inhabitants of the downtown area.  You walk into a very informal and cozy atmosphere, and settle in among the low-lights to the soft chants of the Ethiopian music.  A very gracious waitress moves around the resturaunt in a relaxed, yet efficient manner.

Dining in this resturaunt is a unique experience for those used to the traditional North American cuisine.  The food is arranged and served on a large platter, with tangy, very soft injera beneath it.  You literally dig in, for you use your hands to tear off the injera and scoop up the spiced raw beef, pureed black beans, steamed vegetables, spiced split peas, all of which are intensely flavoured with garlic, ginger and various spices.  With your tastebuds exploding and the informal eating, you begin to feel at home in this little hole, with its shadows, its smell of incense and a broken-down old piano.

And if you like coffee, please do try their freshly roasted ethnic flavour, served in an Ethiopian jar and brought to you on a little wooden table.  The novelty enhances the fantastic food.

It is not customary to make reservations, but the place does get very busy, so call to check for availability: tel. 416-538-0059.
