Even More Ottawa Radio
Earlier this month, blogger Loralea gave some great advice on radio stations in the Ottawa area. I would like to add to her list. Each of Ottawa's two universities has its own radio station, CKCU fm and CHUO fm. These stations are predominantly student/volunteer run and offer a wide variety of programming. And a great deal of this programming offers Canadian content from local and independent artists.
CKCU 93.1 fm is the radio station for Carleton University (http://www.ckcufm.com/). This station has been on the air for over thirty years and also has the distinction of being "the first campus-based community radio station in the country." This station offers something for everyone - discussions of current topical issues, heavy metal and rock tunes, local and touring artists presented live.
CHUO 89.1 fm is Ottawa University's radio station. Like most everything on campus (as I recall, one of the few fully bilingual universities in the world), this radio station operates in both French and English. Equal to CKCU, this station provides a wide selection of music, discussion and more (http://www.chuo.fm/en/home).
What you will often get by listening in to either of these stations is a wonderfully eclectic mix of music and ideas, selected from across the region, country and world. In addition, very little of what they play is restricted to only those artists who are signed with big labels. Enjoy!
