Thai Time

So we were running errands along Walkley Road and decided we were both hungry. Something fast at a mall or drive-thru just was not what either of us were interested in, but we were really unfamiliar with the restaurants in the area. Then we spotted Aiyara (Thai cuisine) tucked in the middle of a mini-strip-mall. We decided to give it a try.

Stepping past the practical yet dull mall exterior, we found ourselves in a charming little restaurant. Aiyara mean elephant and they are everywhere: the dishes, the teapots, even the cutlery. The ambiance of the place as a whole was relaxed and subdued.

To call either of us connoisseurs of Thai food would be a lie, and my companion is hesitant when it comes to spicy food, however we both enjoyed our meals very much. I had a spicy red curry and shrimp dish, and my companion had Pad Thai. The service was excellent, the presentation adorable - I quite like having my salad presented as an edible floral arrangement - and the taste excellent.

Lunch items and appetizers started at about $7 or $8. Aiyara is not large at all, so would fill easily at peak times. If interested, you can find them at 1590 Walkley Road, or call them at 613-526-1703. They also have take-out and delivery.

Another great Thai restaurant that I went to this past weekend when I was in Ottawa is Nokkum on Richmond Road. The service is a little slow, however the food more than makes up for it. Number 80 on the menu is delicious. Sorry I do not know the name. I brought a menu home with me however it is not listed on the takeout menu. It is a red curry, with chicken and shrimp baked inside a cocunut. The flesh of the cocunut absorbs all the spices and is quite tasty.
The restaurant is a quiet find. Make reservations, I was there on Monday eve and there was only one free table around 7:30.

Thanks for the tip. I have been in that area a number of times but never noticed the restaurant - it too seems to be tucked away in a mini-mall. Admittedly, I am not a huge fan of coconut, but it definitely sounds like their other selections would also be worth a try.
