Deep Cove Kayaking

I simply love kayaking. I'm not a strong swimmer, but don't mind strapping myself into a slim fiberglass shell and paddling my way across the water. Strange, I know. But if you experience what I did last weekend at Deep Cove, you may understand.

It was a busy Saturday, so we were lucky we reserved our kayak. We took the double-kayak out of the Deep Cove launch and headed across the open water to hug the opposite shore. Speed boats blared past to create wakes in our path. Heading into them, I was a bit hesitant, but enjoyed the feeling of gently rocking back and forth. When the engine roars subsided, the gentle breeze wasn't enough to uspet the water at our sides. That and the slightly overcast sky made for a comfortable paddle around the bend to Bedwell Bay. Only a few paddlers made their way so far, which was nice. We found a quiet, somewhat secluded beach where we stopped to have a lazy lunch. Back on the water, we circled the boats that spotted the water with sunbathing bums on board. We caught a glimpse of more than just a bum on one occasion... ahh Vancouver. :)

The natural scenery caught our attention as well: an open blue ocean with snow-peaked mountains as its backdrop. A few loons and even a lone seal played amongst it all. It was hard to believe we were only a mere half hour from the city.

Three and a half hours later and we arrived back at the rental site sad to turn in our paddles.

What a great way to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon in Vancouver.
