Lighthouse Park - hiking and history

JUTTING out into the water at the entrance to Burrard Inlet lies Point Atkinson and its historic lighthouse.lighthouse-park-view.JPG

Captain George Vancouver named the site Point Atkinson in 1792, and its first lighthouse was built in 1874.

The landmark is surrounded by 65 hectares of forest - with several well-marked trails.

The main pathway, Beacon Lane Trail, leads directly from the car park to the lighthouse viewpoint, which is perfect for those short on time.

But the real beauty of this park is the opportunity to explore the many other great spots, including the shoreline and deep forest.

So now may not be the park's most popular time of year but, with only a few visitors around, it is perfect for those wanting to escape the city's hustle and bustle. Even in the rain it is a great day trip - just wear suitable clothes and be prepared to get a little muddy.

The park is open from 6am to 10.30pm daily and there is ample parking, as well as toilets and picnic tables.

Former Department of National Defence buildings, used during World War II as a bunkhouse and enlisted men's dining room, are still being used and one is available for meetings and retreats. Call West Vancouver Community Centre on 604-925-7270lighthouse-park-beach.JPG.

The park entrance is off Marine Drive in West Vancouver and can be easily reached by car or public transport.

Take the number 250 bus from downtown (stops along Georgia Street) and ask the driver to let you off at Lighthouse Park - the entrance sign is directly opposite the bus stop.

The park really is beautiful - check out secluded spots such as West Beach, pictured right.

and there are great rock climbing routes too. On a sunny day, the view is surreal ~
