Worthwhile Reading for any Vancouver would-be adventurer
Jack Christie is a name well known to Vancouverites...depending upon the Vancouverite I suppose 
However his books, most notably the one shown to the left 50 Best Day Trips From Vancouver, are invaluable assets both for Visitors to the city and for locals who feel they may not have explored the outlying areas of the region to a satisfactory degree.
I have used this book on numerous occasions to plan day trips from Vancouver and I have always been surprised at the variety of locations, each unique unto themselves, that I can find myself within given only a short period of travel time.
Some of the trips contained in this book, I can easily say, fill out my top ten list of outdoor activities to partake in near the Vancouver region.
The book gives detailed descriptions of each location, and useful guides as to what activities one might be allowed to undertake, and what costs one might have to incur (although I will say so as to not scare off potential day-trippers that most activities come free of charge).
