Edmonton Winter Activities - Snow Problemo!

snowman1.jpg
As the days start to get a little colder - I find myself slipping into hibernation mode. You know those really cold Monday mornings where you just want to throw your alarm clock at the wall, grab another blanket, and continue to sleep the day away in the comfort of your own bed?

Well . . on my way to work today I saw a bunch of kids walking to school - playing in the snow with their rosy-red cheeks. Smiles lit up their faces. These kids are absolutely LOVING winter!

Then it hit me - I used to love it too!

I started to wonder if there was a certain day or a particular time when my views of winter had changed. I have nothing but treasured memories of winter in my childhood. The first day of snow was always a sign of tons of fun to come! So what has changed? It must be my perception of ‘age appropriate’ activities. But when are you too old to enjoy chucking a snowball at someone you love? I don’t think anyone ever outgrows that.

Now I really wasn’t looking forward to the next few months of putting up with Old Man Winter. . . He always seems to overstay his welcome, and I have spent many fall days dreading his arrival. But in reality, I haven't even tried to enjoy it! As my mother would say: "It is what you make of it".

From this day forward, I am determined have an optimistic view on winter. ( Would it be optimistic of me to say “My sidewalk is half-full of snow?” Hmm…definately a point to ponder..)

Here are my top 3 suggestions to a ton of fun in the snow in the great city of Edmonton:

1. Check out the local ski hills:

Edmonton Ski Club

Rabbit Hill

Snow Valley

Sunridge

2. Enjoy a day of skating at one of these great parks:

Hawrelak Park

Jackie Parker Recreation Area

Victoria Park

Or even hit up the Ice Palace in West Edmonton Mall

3. Grab your toboggan and head out to one of these awesome locations:

Gallagher Park

Government House Park

Rundle Park

Whitemud Nature Reserve

And for those of you who would rather just enjoy a quiet winter day around home; you can build a snowman, make a snow angel or just have a good old fashioned snowball fight with the family!

Whatever you decide to do for your winter activity.. just remember to dress warm and be careful! – or you might end up like the people on this video!
