Nando's: Peri Peri Good
An alternative to the deep-fried greasiness of KFC lies in the roasted peri-peri goodness of Nando’s Chicken. The healthier side options of rice and baked potato compared to the French fries and gravy of KFC allowed for a decrease in the chance of pyrosis (a fancy word for heartburn) and ulcers. Nando’s, which is on 3333 32 Avenue NE, is usually filled with families and provides a warm environment contrary to it’s slightly off-the-beaten track location.
Nando’s offers several package meals in addition to their single servings of chicken and sides. That night, my sister, her boyfriend and I ordered the meal meant for a “Familia” which consisted of 2 whole chickens, one regular side, one large side and two chicken kebabs. Although the chicken was delicious, the rice could have been warmed up a little bit and the kebab could have used a little bit more seasoning. The sauces were definitely a treat to try as they were quite different from the ketchup and chili sauce normally available at fast-food restaurants. Nando’s offered a garlic sauce along with a hot sauce that seemed to be combined with the garlic sauce for an extra kick. Iced teas had refills available and beer could be purchased at the front counter along with your meal.
The refreshing “cafeteria” mode of ordering food at the front, receive a number for your order, take a seat and the server brings the meal to you allowed for supreme efficiency. My only comment about Nando’s would be the amount of seasoning they placed on the peri fries. Try it when you’re tired of cooking and just want something fast, simple and healthy.
