Superpipe Snowboarding
If you love snowboarding, there's no better place to go than to Calgary, Alberta. Canada Olympic Park, where the 1988 Olympic Winter Games hosted the bobsleigh and ski jump events, is soon to open one of the best snowboarding facilities in the world. The new 22-foot half-pipe Superpipe snowboard facility carved out of the slope is now in need of only a few finishing touches before the world elite of the sport converge here in about a week. It's one of only three such facilities in all of North America. The added steepness allows for more spectacular tricks, while maintaining a safer rating than smaller pipes. The COP pipe also has the exact specifications as the one under construction at Cypress Mountain, British Columbia for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
The World Cup Snowboarding competition is being hosted in Calgary, Alberta, Canada for the first time in almost twelve years on March 2 and 3, 2007. And the prize? A whopping $100,000 in prize money is up for grabs, guaranteeing a great turnout of talent and exciting entertainment. And, with the relatively mild Calgary weather, it's sure to be a successful event that just cannot be missed.
In addition to the $350,000 half-pipe upgrade, another $2.5 million has been invested for other additions and upgrades to COP facility.
COP is close to several hotels and restaurants and includes a ski hill for those who just want to glide down a powdery white blanket of fresh snow. COP is sure to hold something for everyone, whether it's to ski, snowboard, bobsleigh, trick out on the half-pipe, watch the World Cup event, or just hang out. So, come on down!
